When it comes to link directories, does google 'dislike' to give decent page rank based on these links?

Yes, I believe that is the case. Google has many ways to thward people who are plainly trying to build Pagerank and multiple-website link directories is a common method used to gain PR.

I think Google treats some of those "directories" the same way as link farms. And link farms are not very popular over at Google. Yes, I believe they do violate some of the TOS.

Link farms bear a heavy penalty in google's eyes and always have. I recommend staying as far away from those directories that have been deemed "link farms" as have association with them will hurt your rank.

If I am not wrong then we are talking about directories in a wrong way. I think we shouldn't use directories for link building or PR. Main purpose of directories is to direct some traffic to your site with out getting listed in Search Engines. I might be wrong but I never deny realities. Improving PR or links through Directories can be counted in Black Hat.

Most directories that do not sell links for pagerank purposes are "O.K" with google, but those who try to manipulate google and abuse the pagerank get booted by google.
Few examples like avivadirectory.com , it was an authority site few months back but now its gone from google.

So, as long as you do not try to sell links to pass on the PR , i think google is ok with such a directory.

Directories have attracted a lot of attention during the last months. Google obviously has a problem with the idea of passing PR or manipulating SERPs. Directories has been used to achieve both and now google is taking action. I used to own some of them and I have written some articles about the proper use and purpose of a directory. Not many agreed with me back in summer time. I wonder what they think know.

Well! according to my personal experience and information this policy is still under consideration and you should avoid if you want long term benefits. But in short term means I personally got good ranking only through reciprocal link directories.

I love how everyone jumps through Google's hoops. It's like they have *the ultimate power*.
:P
Link directories are *not* liked. If you have an actual page of relevant links about whatever the site is about then that's fine; I've never heard of that being a problem, but otherwise they are just linkfarms.

Wasn't there a directory from back in the day that you could submit to? Although, now I think it is very hard to get accepted.
