Since for some reason I can't post in the Windows 7 forum (don't have the right permissions, it says), I'm posting this here instead. So...
Unless I've been reading things wrong, it looks like Windows 7 will be shipping in multiple versions just like Vista.
Unlike Vista, Windows 7 apparently has all the features in a single SKU, which means that even if you have the Starter edition, all the features of the Ultimate edition are already installed but not activated. In order to activate or unlock another edition, you'll need to use the Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU).
Just as proof that this is real, here's a quote from
Brandon LeBlanc on the Windows Team Blog:
Quote:
for Windows 7, we are using a single image for all SKUs. This means the bits for all the editions are already on your computer if you are running Windows 7. With Windows Anytime Upgrade, users can unlock and upgrade to a different SKU much easier than before.
Now, I don't know about you, but this looks like unnecessary bloat to me. After all, your PC's space and resources will be taken up by features that you'll probably never use unless you upgrade. Seriously, Microsoft, if you thought people gave you flak about Vista...
