There are times when your usual antivirus program doesn't catch a nasty infection. I've had that happen to me a time or two myself. Lately, I've been using (and recommending) that people use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for those times when you really to remove an infection that nothing else seems to fix. Frankly, it's caught things that my regular antivirus (AVG Free, in case you're wondering) didn't catch. The free version doesn't have real-time protection, yeah, but I consider this as more of an "as you need it" kind of thing. ;)

It has a free and paid version, the paid version only costs $25, and is well worth the money you put down for it.

A friend of mine at work told me about this a few months ago and I've had it running on my home computers ever since. The free version works very nicely. You just need to remember to run the updates and scan your computer on a regular schedule.

Generally 60 out of a 100 times an anti virus won't catch a destructive spyware. This is the reason why many people go with special anti spyware softwares. This is the first time I had been hearing about this software. I had been using super anti spyware for about a year now and it had been working satisfactorily.

I've had really great success with this which is really nice considering its a free program. The main difference that I can see between the free and paid versions are real time protection. But if you just remember to run the program manually on a regular basis, you'll be fine.
