First, I'm on an older computer with an older everything. I tried plugging in a mouse to a USB port and when it went for the driver info etc., it asked me about 3 files that it said was needed. I didn't know these files or whether I should download them or not. They were names like hidden.inf. I couldn't find out anything about whether I should let the program download them or not. Any advice?

Can you look up the maker and model of the mouse and see if there are drivers available on their website? I wouldn't think that plugging a mouse in would trigger any viruses or anything like that to prompt you to download dangerous files, but getting them directly from a site would be playing it safe.

A better question might be: do you know the make and model. Otherwise its going to be a hunt like a needle in a haystack. I have been lucky to have few issues like this, most times any printers end up being the ones to give me trouble.

Yes, I do have that information. It's a Logitech mouse and I have all the information on it. You're probably right that going to the website would be the way to deal with it, except that I still wish I knew what those files were. I got the impression that they were supposed to be system files or something.

Thanks.

If they are needed and if the mouse is still supported by the Logitech site, then the files will be included in the drivers that they let you download. If they aren't there, if you can't get the drivers, then you need a newer mouse.

Even if it's an older mouse, there is bound to be someone out on the Internet who has the driver and is willing to share. I'd use a search engine and type in something like "drivers logitech <model number>" and see what comes up. Download the drivers to where you'll remember the location so that when the computer looks for the drivers, you can point it in the right direction.

This is true. You might find them on a torrent site also-and I would think that this is one torrenting use that couldn't be frowned upon too much since you are just seeking support that the company has ceased to offer.

Thanks for the responses. My computer is older, but the mouse isn't old. In fact, it was sent to me from Logitech. I just didn't know if this was really a driver issue or if there were basic files missing on my computer (which is possible -- long story).
